Tumblr Needs to Fix Its Transparency Problem:

So the Daily Dot has noticed what the rest of us grokked a while ago: Tumblr keeps rolling out new shit for no reason, sometimes without telling anyone, and then goes silent. Apparently I’m not the only journalist who has tried and failed to get Tumblr to talk to them. Everything is a mess at Tumblr HQ.

The writer points out something disturbing: a lot of what’s going on at Tumblr mirrors stuff that went on at LiveJournal because that place became a shitshow.

Can we talk about how awesome I desperately want this to be???

Jane is an astrophysicist. An astrophysicist who gets to go to another world. Oh my gosh. I want her to geek out. I want her to geek out so freaking hard.

When she steps off the bifrost I want her to be vaguely intimidated by Heimdell and be like “oookay” and Darcy to start hitting on him bc hellloooo Idris and then they’ll step outside and Jane will FREAK. OUT. Because STAR MAPS?! Different areas of space?! Calculating the age of the cosmos and if it’s the same universe or a different one and where exactly in the universe Asgard is situated and time dilation and ALL THIS SUPER CUTE GEEK STUFF?!?!?

And then I want the parents to stroll up. And her to still be geeking out over stars. And she’s trying to take pictures and stuff. But Frigga and Odin and hello they’re kind of gods? Or at least royalty? Oh and she’s totally banging their son so she should probably be polite. And Frigga is super sweet and IDK if Odin’ll be a dick or not but whatever?!

I just really want geek!Jane and I’m crazy excited for this and if the movie doesn’t do this I will be so fucking upset. Because you sent an astrophysicist to another world, and this needs to be addressed. And fulfill all our little space-geeks’ childhood fantasies.

So many people seem to think that her relationship with Thor reduces her character’s ambitions as an astrophysicist and makes her little more than a token love interest but this post right here shows how much it actually enhances it. Thor has opened up the universe to her and through him she has learned how she was on the right track with her research all along.

Can you fucking IMAGINE, as an expert in your field that has been maligned by years for your peers, having a physical manifestation of the truth of your theories land in front of your car?! Can you even imagine that?! Maybe it’s because I’m in academia, but holy fuck, this would be the most amazing thing ever. And to have him sit there (looking like Chris Hemsworth, hello) and telling you that your life work is correct?? The fact that Jane didn’t break down crying as he explained the world tree to her is a testament to the strength of her character, because I would have. All that work, all that ridicule and fight and scraping, especially as a woman in a STEM field, would have been completely and utterly worth it, and overwhelming to have happen.

Think about being Jane. Really think about it. You’re a woman in an almost entirely male-dominated field. You probably don’t have another woman in your entire department (yes, this is a true thing that happens, welcome to the program I’m currently in). You have some out-there theories, that you KNOW are right. But you get mocked for them. Of course you do. Not only do you get mocked because they’re crazy, but you probably have guys sneering at you behind your back because you’re a woman and they automatically think you’re more prone to flights of fancy and irrational thinking and all that bullshit. Finding an advisor to work with would be near impossible. She got stupid lucky with Selvig, but even then they’re in the middle of podunk nowhere trying to get their research done. When you go out to meet new people or even with friends, i.e. people like Darcy, no one has any clue what you’re talking about. The people who do, think it’s stupid. Childish. Dumb.

And then you run over proof with your car. Do you know how vindicating that would be? How overwhelming? Relieving?

And then that walking proof of your theory takes you to another planet to see it for yourself.

Holy. Fuck.

I would have collapsed in a corner crying for joy looongg before the end of Thor 1, and Thor 2 would just have me clutching Thor and sobbing and pointing at stars and shit and trying to explain why this was so important in between heaving sobs.

Jane is fucking amazing, and I don’t understand why more of the fandom doesn’t love her.

But maybe I’m biased, seeing as I’m stuck in my grad student office at 11:00 at night pulling an all-nighter so that I can defend my thesis barely over a month from now. In my department which has no other women in my program. Maybe that makes me incredibly biased towards Jane. And maybe you thought she wasn’t handled properly in the context of the movie, which is fine. But don’t go trashing her around me, because next to Peggy, Jane is my best girl in the MCU. \m/ \m/

Arabic is one of the most widely spoken languages in the world and English doesn’t surpass it by much. Most acts of terrorism in the United States have historically been committed by English-speaking white men. The KKK and other white supremacist/far-right groups have committed multiple 9/11s alone, especially over the last century, but we usually aren’t overly suspicious of English-speaking white men without any known ties to the aforementioned groups. In fact, since the early 90s, most terrorist attacks in the United States came from mostly white, right-wing groups and they’ve been steadily increasing, especially around 2006. Individuals of a Middle Eastern heritage and/or Muslims haven’t even come close. And yet, agencies like Homeland Security and the FBI have disassembled task forces and departments that focused on those groups, even refusing to track and analyze the terrorist attacks committed. Why could that be?

I just want to nail this to every stable surface I can find. I cannot count the amount of times that I’ve seen fat folks being encouraged, cajoled, and even forced into behaviors that would be recognized as disordered eating/exercising patterns in thin folks.

Pretty much everything that’s done on shows like The Biggest Loser would be called out as pro-ana/pro-orthorexia in a thin person. Exercising past the point that it hurts, to the point where you’re throwing up, even injuring yourself? Berating yourself because you didn’t lose ENOUGH weight this week? Constantly talking about how fat is weakness and thinness will make everything better, about how you can’t stand to be your current weight anymore? Emphasis on weight as a sign of how much control, strength, and worth you have? Viewing food as bad, as a temptation to sin? Constant sharing and talking about tips on how to minimize food intake, how to lose weight?

That sounds exactly like every pro-ana/pro-mia blog I’ve ever seen. It’s also what fat people are told we need to be doing to ourselves until we’re thin.

Tumblr’s autotruncate makes no sense to me. Why would it think a post that consists of three short bullet points needs to be turned into a link? I’m guessing because it registers each one as being a separate paragraph, but still, it’s ridiculous.

The fact that Tumblr only autotruncates text posts really shows how little its designers understood about how the service would be used. It doesn’t truncate the discussion under picture posts or a quote, no matter how long those things get, because to convert the posts to links would destroy the content.

So obviously it’s a good thing that it doesn’t, because there’s often compelling or entertaining or informative discussion going on beneath a picture or a quote. But given their willingness to hide/impede such conversations in text posts, I have to believe that they didn’t come up with a way to truncate the commentary on other posts because they didn’t expect it to happen on the level that it does.

They thought “Text posts are full of text, if people start talking back and forth on them they will get too long and that will be inconvenient because we are a microblogging site. No one wants to open their dashboard and see a bunch of long, drawn-out discussion.”

They didn’t think the same things would happen on a picture post, because a picture post is a picture post.

You can’t fault someone for not fully understanding the scope of what a networking tool they create and put out on the web will be used for, because when you’ve got millions of people connecting with each other it’s inevitable that some of them will do so in unexpected ways.

But what is unfortunate is when someone manages to create a communication tool as powerful as Tumblr and seems… embarrassed by it. The way the updates focus on creating a slickly polished user experience and not on supporting the communities built on Tumblr or fostering the discussions that happen here (if anything, they do the opposite), it often seems like the people directing the development are looking at what’s been done with their creation and saying, “No, I wanted the opposite of this.”

I’d be happier if they solved the tl;dr problem—because that’s what it is really—by having a “more” link that lets the reader expand a given discussion as needed, instead of requiring them to follow a link off the dashboard.

That would be handy. And it would work as a client-side solution that could be implemented with scripting that could easily be turned on or off (or have a custom threshold) by the user. And it would do more to actually address the supposed reason for the interface upgrades, i.e., to give a unified user experience centered around the dashboard.
